University of Kansas Chemist Develops AI-Detection Tool with 99% Accuracy

A new tool has been developed by scientists that can detect scientific text generated by AI, such as ChatGPT, with 99% accuracy. The tool was designed using a smaller dataset and human insight to distinguish AI from human writing. It focuses on scientific writing found in peer-reviewed journals, offering more accuracy than general-purpose detectors. 

Heather Desaire, a chemist at the University of Kansas who applies machine learning to biomedical studies, developed the tool. A recent study published in Cell Reports Physical Science demonstrated the efficacy of her AI-detection method and provided source code for others to replicate the tool.

Desaire said accurate AI-detection tools are urgently needed to defend scientific integrity. She said her detection method's success depends on narrowing the scope of writing under scrutiny to scientific writing found in peer-reviewed journals. This improves accuracy over existing AI-detection tools like the RoBERTa detector.

Desaire’s coauthors were all from her KU research group: Romana Jarosova, David Huax, Aleesa E. Chua and Madeline Isom. Desaire and her team’s success at detecting AI text may stem from the high level of human insight that went into devising the code. Credits to SciTech daily
